Validate an IBAN

Paste an IBAN to check its length, structure and check digits. The check tells you whether the number is well formed, not whether the account exists.

How the check digits are calculated

The steps below follow the IBAN shown above and update with every new one.

  1. Take the BBAN, the national part of the number (18 characters for United Kingdom).

    BDIR03980104901276
  2. Move the country code, followed by “00”, to the end.

    BDIR03980104901276GB00
  3. Replace each letter with a number (A = 10 … Z = 35). Here GB becomes 1611.

    1113182703980104901276161100
  4. Divide this large number by 97 and keep the remainder.

    1113182703980104901276161100 mod 97 = 96
  5. Subtract the remainder from 98: the result is the check digits, placed right after the country code.

    98 − 96 = 02 → GB02BDIR03980104901276

Frequently asked questions

Do these IBANs belong to real accounts?

No. Bank, branch and account codes are random. The number passes format and check-digit validation, but no bank or account holder is linked to it, and a transfer to it would be rejected.

What are fake IBANs used for?

Filling test databases, checking form validation, feeding automated tests, or learning the MOD 97 algorithm without handling real bank details.

What is a national check?

Some countries add their own checksum inside the BBAN, such as the RIB key in France or the CIN in Italy. For countries marked with a national check in the list, it is computed; for the others, the structure is respected but any internal check is not guaranteed.

Is my data sent anywhere?

No. Generation and validation run entirely in your browser, with no network requests.
