German IBAN structure
A German IBAN has 22 characters: the country code DE, two check digits, then the BBAN, which is made up of the following: 8-digit Bankleitzahl (BLZ) that identifies the bank and branch, followed by a 10-digit account number (Kontonummer), left-padded with zeros.
| Position | Length | Content | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1–2 | 2 letters | ■ Country code | DE |
| 3–4 | 2 digits | ■ IBAN check digits | 26 |
| 5–12 | 8 digits | ■ Bank code | 48110499 |
| 13–22 | 10 digits | ■ Account number | 6412893885 |
Good to know
German banks use more than 100 different check-digit methods for account numbers, assigned bank by bank by the Bundesbank. This generator guarantees the IBAN check digits, not those bank-specific methods, so a system that validates the account number against the Bundesbank table may reject it. The documented example DE89 3704 0044 0532 0130 00 is often quoted as an IBAN Beispiel.
To check an existing IBAN, use the validator on the home page.
Frequently asked questions
Germany: are these real IBANs?
No. The bank and account codes are random. The IBAN passes format and check-digit validation, but no bank or account holder is behind it, and a transfer would be rejected.
Germany: how many characters does an IBAN have?
Always 22: DE, two check digits and a 18-character BBAN. Any other length is invalid.
Germany: do the IBANs pass national checks?
The IBAN check digits are always valid and the structure follows the national format, but bank-specific account checks are not guaranteed (see “Good to know”).
