Dutch IBAN structure

A Dutch IBAN has 18 characters: the country code NL, two check digits, then the BBAN, which is made up of the following: 4-letter bank code (taken from the bank's BIC) followed by a 10-digit account number.

Good to know

Dutch account numbers used to follow the elfproef (eleven test), but it is no longer required for new accounts, so most systems only check the IBAN itself. The bank letters here are random and do not identify a real Dutch bank.

To check an existing IBAN, use the validator on the home page.

Frequently asked questions

Netherlands: are these real IBANs?

No. The bank and account codes are random. The IBAN passes format and check-digit validation, but no bank or account holder is behind it, and a transfer would be rejected.

Netherlands: how many characters does an IBAN have?

Always 18: NL, two check digits and a 14-character BBAN. Any other length is invalid.

Netherlands: do the IBANs pass national checks?

The IBAN check digits are always valid and the structure follows the national format, but bank-specific account checks are not guaranteed (see “Good to know”).
