Austrian IBAN structure
A Austrian IBAN has 20 characters: the country code AT, two check digits, then the BBAN, which is made up of the following: 5-digit bank code (Bankleitzahl) followed by an 11-digit account number.
| Position | Length | Content | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1–2 | 2 letters | ■ Country code | AT |
| 3–4 | 2 digits | ■ IBAN check digits | 91 |
| 5–9 | 5 digits | ■ Bank code | 09742 |
| 10–20 | 11 digits | ■ Account number | 65404535639 |
Good to know
Austria has no national check digit inside the BBAN, so the IBAN check digits are the only checksum. That makes Austrian test IBANs a simple baseline for validation tests, since they depend only on the MOD 97 algorithm.
To check an existing IBAN, use the validator on the home page.
Frequently asked questions
Austria: are these real IBANs?
No. The bank and account codes are random. The IBAN passes format and check-digit validation, but no bank or account holder is behind it, and a transfer would be rejected.
Austria: how many characters does an IBAN have?
Always 20: AT, two check digits and a 16-character BBAN. Any other length is invalid.
Austria: do the IBANs pass national checks?
The IBAN check digits are always valid and the structure follows the national format, but bank-specific account checks are not guaranteed (see “Good to know”).
