French IBAN structure

A French IBAN has 27 characters: the country code FR, two check digits, then the BBAN, which is made up of the following: 5-digit bank code (code banque), 5-digit branch code (code guichet), 11-character account number and the 2-digit RIB key (clé RIB).

Good to know

The RIB key is a national checksum calculated from the bank code, branch code and account number with a modulo 97 formula. This generator computes it, so the IBANs pass both the IBAN check and the French RIB check. Monaco uses exactly the same format.

Frequently asked questions

France: are these real IBANs?

No. The bank and account codes are random. The IBAN passes format and check-digit validation, but no bank or account holder is behind it, and a transfer would be rejected.

France: how many characters does an IBAN have?

Always 27: FR, two check digits and a 23-character BBAN. Any other length is invalid.

France: do the IBANs pass national checks?

Yes. On top of the IBAN check digits, the generator computes the national check, so the numbers pass both.
