Portuguese IBAN structure

A Portuguese IBAN has 25 characters: the country code PT, two check digits, then the BBAN, which is made up of the following: 4-digit bank code, 4-digit branch code, 11-digit account number and 2 national check digits; together they form the 21-digit NIB.

Good to know

Because the NIB check digits make the whole NIB equal to 1 modulo 97, every valid Portuguese IBAN starts with PT50. A Portuguese IBAN with other check digits is a quick sign of an error. This generator computes the NIB digits, so all its Portuguese IBANs start with PT50.

Frequently asked questions

Portugal: are these real IBANs?

No. The bank and account codes are random. The IBAN passes format and check-digit validation, but no bank or account holder is behind it, and a transfer would be rejected.

Portugal: how many characters does an IBAN have?

Always 25: PT, two check digits and a 21-character BBAN. Any other length is invalid.

Portugal: do the IBANs pass national checks?

Yes. On top of the IBAN check digits, the generator computes the national check, so the numbers pass both.
